Abstract

Copolymers which are soluble in or compatible with benzine are derived from a mixture of from 50-90 per cent of a cycloalkanol ester of a polymerizable unsaturated acid and 10-50 per cent of an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alcohol which contains at least 8 carbon atoms, and optionally 1-20 per cent of another ethylenically unsaturated compound such as vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl chloride, polymerizable acids and amides, methacrolein and maleic anhydride. Cycloalkanol esters specified are the cyclohexyl, methyl cyclohexyl, di- or tri-methyl cyclohexyl, tert.-butyl cyclohexyl and p-cyclohexyl-cyclohexyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids and other acrylic acids substituted in the alpha position by lower alkyl groups or halogen atoms, and maleic and fumaric acids. Specified esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid, the alcohol component of which contains at least 8 carbon atoms, are the decyl, dodecyl, octadecyl, p-cyclohexyl-cyclohexyl and hydro-abietyl esters. Polymerization may be carried out in bulk, in solution in solvents such as benzine and xylene or in an aqueous medium, e.g. one containing polyvinyl alcohol as an emulsifier, and may be activated by heat, ultra-violet light or catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide, azo-diisobutyric dinitrile and redox systems. Copolymers made from monomers containing reactive groups, e.g. maleic anhydride, may be cross-linked by treatment with polyamines or polyhydric alcohols, e.g. trimethylol propane. The copolymers may be used in lacquers and for treating textiles.
