Abstract

A polymerizable composition comprises a solvent composed of from 10 to 300 parts by weight of a liquid vinyl or vinylidene monomer and 100 parts by weight of a half ester of castor oil or castor oil derivatives and an unsaturated alpha-beta dicarboxylic acid. It is preferred that the half-ester comprises from 2 to 4 parts by weight of castor oil or castor oil derivatives and one part by weight of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and that the free carboxyl group be esterified with an aliphatic alcohol. The vinyl monomer may be styrene, vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate. Specified unsaturated dicarboxylic acids are maleic acid and anhydride. The composition may also contain 300 to 400 parts by weight of the reaction product of tung oil or oiticica oil and an unsaturated alpha-beta dicarboxylic acid, and/or up to 100 parts by weight of the reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol, an unsaturated alpha-beta dicarboxylic acid and a saturated dibasic organic acid having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms in the aliphatic chain. When this second addition is present, a further amount of from 10 to 30 parts of the solvent liquid monomer is also added. The reaction product may comprise 100 parts by weight of tung oil or oiticica oil and from 20 to 25 parts by weight of the unsaturated alpha-beta dicarboxylic acid and from 20 to 100 parts by weight of the reaction product of equimolar quantities of a polyhydric alcohol and dicarboxylic acids at least 50 per cent of the dicarboxylic acids having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms in the aliphatic chain. The mixtures may be stabilized by the addition of 0.02 per cent of an antioxidant such as hydroquinone. A catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide is added and the liquid polymerized by heat.
