Abstract

A non-yellowing water dilutable resin composition comprises an aq. solution of a salt of a copolymer formed by copolymerizing in the absence of aq. alkali (1) a product obtained by reacting (A) an oil which does not contain more than 10% of linolenic acid residues, has an iodine value of 125-155 mgs./gm., and comprises a triglyceride ester of an unsaturated fatty acid having at least 12 carbon atoms in the carbon chain containing the unsaturation, a fatty acid obtained from the oil or esters of such acids with (B) a dicarboxylic acid or anhydride having less than 10 carbon atoms in any carbon chain, no cyclic groups, and olefinic unsaturation or partial esters of such acids or anhydrides with (2) a vinyl aromatic compound which is initially present as not more than 50% by weight of the initial reactants and a watermiscible solvent for the copolymer. The copolymer may be derived from (1) the reaction product of (A) tobacco, or safflower seeds or soya bean oil or the methyl, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol esters of the fatty acids derived therefrom and (B) maleic, and (2) styrene or vinyl toluene and optionally methyl methacrylate in the presence of di-tert.-butyl peroxide and may be neutralized with triethylamine. The water-miscible solvent may be ethylene glycol monobutyl ether or its acetate. The composition may contain cobalt naphthenate as a drier, when used to form films.
