Abstract

Copolymers are prepared by heating up to not higher than 120 DEG C. a soluble saturated polyester obtained from a polybasic saturated carboxylic acid and a polyhydric saturated alcohol, said polyester having free hydroxyl groups, and an unsaturated compound which is an anhydride of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, an ester of a dihydric alcohol and an unsaturated carboxylic acid, a linear polyester of maleic acid, hexahydro-1.3.5-triacrylyl-s-triazine, or the reaction product of 1 mol. of a di-isocyanate and 1 mol. of acrylic acid, having at least one reactive >C = C< group, and reacting the resulting addition product, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, with a monomeric polymerizable vinyl compound which is styrene or an ester of acrylic acid, vinyl acetate or a mixture of any of these with an ester of a polybasic carboxylic acid and an unsaturated monohydric alcohol, such as diallyl phthalate or adipate. The saturated polyester may be obtained from adipic, phthalic, malonic, succinic, sebacic or trimellitic acid and ethylene, diethylene or butylene glycol, 1,6-hexanediol, glycerol, a hexanetriol, pentaerythritol or trimethylolpropane. The polymerization catalyst may be benzoyl, cumene or lauroyl peroxide, or cobalt, lead or manganese naphthenate or maleate. Specification 630,370 is referred to.
