Abstract

A polymeric unsaturated ester resin, soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons, acetic acid esters and ketones, is made by heating in the absence of a polymerization catalyst (1) at least one a , b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or ester-forming derivative thereof and (2) at least one monohydric ether alcohol having at least two ethylenic double bonds in a b -g -position to ether oxygen. As additional reactants there may be used mono-, di- or poly-hydric alcohols which may contain one b , g -unsaturated ether radical; hydroxy acids; monocarboxylic acids (including oil fatty acids); saturated dicarboxylic acids; maleic acid adducts; or fatty oils. The Specification contains lists of suitable reactants. Reaction may be effected in the melt or in the presence of azeotripic entraining agents and possibly in the presence of hydroquinone or triphenyl phosphite. The products may be used in the manufacture of lacquers, castings, mouldings, impregnating compositions or sealing compositions, if desired in admixture with conventional driers, radical releasing catalysts or unsaturated monomers, e.g. styrene, vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate. In examples, resins were made by reacting (1) Maleic anhydride and trimethylol propanediallyl ether; (2) Maleic anhydride, trimethylol ethane-diallyl ether and ethylene glycol: the product was copolymerized with styrene in the presence of cobalt naphthenate and 1-hydroxy-11-hydroperoxydicyclohexyl peroxide; (3) Maleic anhydride and the diallyl ether of 3, 3-dimethylolbutanol-2; (4) Maleic anhydride, and 1,3,5-hexanetriol-diallyl ether; (5) A polyester from maleic anhydride, 1, 6-hexanediol and phthalic anhydride, with pentaerythritol-triallyl ether, benzyl alcohol and maleic anhydride; (6) A polyester from fumaric acid, diethylene glycol and phthalic anhydride, with pentaerythritol diallyl-monobenzyl ether; (7) itaconic acid, trimethylol propane-diallyl ether, phthalic anhydride and diethylene glycol; (8) Maleic anhydride, trimethylol propane-dimethallyl ether (free from peroxide), and b , b -bis-(4-hydroxycyclohexyl)-propane; (9) Maleic anhydride, glycerol-a -g -diethallyl ether, 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol and phthalic anhydride; (10) A polyester from maleic anhydride and diethylene glycol, with 1, 4-butene-2, 3-diol-monoallyl ether; (11) Maleic anhydride, trimethylol propane-diallyl ether, trimethylol propane-monoallyl ether, hydrogenated abietic acid, diethylene glycol and castor oil.
