Abstract

A process for the production of an oil modified alkyd resin soluble in a mixture of water and an amphipathic solvent, containing an alkali metal hydroxide, comprises heating to esterifying temperatures a reaction mixture comprising a polyoxyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight of from 200 to 6000, a polycarboxylic acid, a polyhydric alcohol other than said polyoxyalkylene glycol and a drying, semi-drying or non-drying oil, or the fatty acids thereof, to produce a substantially-completely esterified oil-modified alkyd resin containing up to 25% by weight of combined polyoxyalkylene glycol and thereafter reacting said alkyd resin with a different polycarboxylic acid to produce a final product having an acid value of from 25 to 50. The fatty acid radicals may be polymerized before, during or after the polymerization with unsaturated monomers, e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene or derivatives of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Amphipathic solvents are defined as being those miscible both with the alkyd resin and with water, e.g. n- and iso-propanol, hexylene glycol, the mono ethyl and butyl ethers of ethylene and diethylene glycol and the acetates thereof, the phenyl and benzyl ethers of ethylene glycol, diacetone alcohol and dimethoxy tetraglycol. The second polycarboxylic acid preferably contains two carboxyl groups and one or more additional carboxylic groups and/or ethylenic double bonds, e.g. trimellitic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic and citric acid. In the examples, alkyds are made from phthalic anhydride, polyethylene glycol, penaerythritol, linseed oil fatty acids and:-(1) trimellitic anhydride; (2) maleic anhydride and (3) linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil, styrene and xylol, the products being dissolved in the specified solvents and ground with titanium dioxide and metal driers.
