Abstract

Lubricating compositions comprise an oil and a polymer or copolymer of an alkoxylated partial ester obtained by partially esterifying an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol and then reacting with an alkylene oxide whereby substantially all the remaining free carboxylic acid groups are neutralized. Oils specified are mineral oils such as paraffinic oils, animal and vegetable oils, and synthetic oils such as complex esters, diesters, formals and methacrylates. Materials used in the preparation of the alkoxylated esters (see Group IV (a)) are C3 to C20 aliphatic alcohols such as those produced by the oxo process, e.g. a C9 alcohol; fumaric and maleic acids and their alkyl derivatives; and alkylene oxides of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene and propylene oxides. The alkoxylated ester may be copolymerized with hydrocarbons such as styrene, nitriles such as acrylonitrile, maleic anhydride, and esters (or mixtures thereof) such as vinyl acetate, methacrylic acid esters and C3 to C20 monohydric alcohol esters of maleic and fumaric acids, e.g. C16 oxo alcohol esters. The lubricating oil compositions may also include conventional additives.ALSO:Compositions comprise a lubricating oil and a polymer or copolymer of an alkoxylated partial ester obtained by partially esterifying an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol and then reacting with an alkylene oxide whereby substantially all the remaining free carboxylic acid groups are neutralized. Specified compounds used in the preparation of the alkoxylated esters are C3 to C20 aliphatic alcohols such as those produced by the oxo process, e.g. a C9 alcohol; fumaric and maleic acids and their alkyl derivatives; and alkylene oxides of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene and propylene oxides. The alkoxylated ester may be copolymerized with hydrocarbons such as styrene, nitriles such as acrylonitrile, maleic anhydride and esters-or mixtures thereof-such as vinyl acetate, methacrylic acid esters and C3 to C20 monohydric alcohol esters of maleic and fumaric acids, e.g. C16 oxo alcohol esters. Polymerization may be effected in bulk or in solvents such as gasoline, lubricating oils and chloroform. Friedel-Crafts, ionic, free radical or radiation processes may be used, e.g. using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst. In Example (2) the alkoxylated ester is purified before polymerization by blowing with carbon dioxide and treating with an activated earth.
