Abstract
Copolymers are produced by copolymerising from 75-40 per cent by weight of an a , b -unsaturated monocarboxylic ester of formula <FORM:0663702/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl radicals, chlorine or fluorine, R1 is hydrogen, an alkyl group containing 1-4 C atoms, chlorine or fluorine, R11 and R111 are hydrogen, methyl or ethyl radicles, R12 is a C1-C18 alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkyl substituted cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl group, X is an integer not greater than 3, and Z is oxygen or sulphur, with from 25 to 60 per cent of a second, a , b -unsaturated monocarboxylic ester of formula <FORM:0663702/IV (a)/2> where R and R1 are as before and R11 is a C8 to C20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkyl substituted cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl group. The esters include the acrylates, methacrylates, ethacrylates, chloro- and fluoro-acrylates and methacrylates and thioacrylates. The first named esters may be derived from the alcohols: 2-ethylbutoxy ethanol, n-hexyloxyethanol, C8 oxo-ethanol, C13 oxo-ethanol, 2-ethylhexyloxyethanol, phenyloxyethanol, benzyloxyethanol, decyloxyethoxyethanol, 2 - octylmercapto-ethanol, 2 - (2 - ethylbutoxy) - propanol, and tetrahydrofurfuryl, and the second named esters from the alcohols: decyl-, C- oxo-, C- oxo-, C13 oxo-, coconut oil-, cetyl-, eicosyl-, and stearyl alcohols and methyl cyclohexanol. Specified copolymers are 2-ethylbutoxy ethyl acrylate with decyl or octyldecyl methacrylate or lauryl acrylate and 2-ethyl hexyloxy ethyl methacrylate with a C13 oxo-acrylate. The monomers may be copolymerized by heating at a temperature up to about 100 DEG C. using bulk or emulsion technique. Diluents for use in the bulk method include naphthas, lubricating oils, chloroform, toluene, esters and alcohols. Catalysts, particularly peroxide type catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, cumene or tertiary butyl peroxide and redox type catalysts may be employed. Small amounts of a third monomer may be present before copolymerization. Specified monomers are methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylates, methyl, ethyl and isobutyl methacrylates, dimethyl fumarate and itaconate, diethyl, fumarate, maleate and itaconate, vinyl esters and ethers, styrene, acrylonitrile, and isobutylene. Mixtures may also be used. The copolymers may be used as oil additives or for incorporation in lubricating grease compositions and cutting and grinding oils.
