Abstract

A synthetic resinous drying compositions is obtained by esterifying a copolymer of a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. styrene) and an olefinically unsaturated organic acid containing short aliphatic chains with not more than 8 carbon atoms (e.g. maleic, acrylic or methacrylic acid), either with a mixture of a drying oil fatty acid, a polyhydric alcohol and optionally a saturated polycarboxylic organic acid (e.g. phthalic acid), or with a mixture of drying oil fatty acids partially exterified with a polyhydric alcohol and containing residual hydroxyl groups and optionally a saturated polycarboxylic organic acid. Particular ingredients disclosed are styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer, linseed oil fatty acids, and glycerol or diethylene glycol. Paints and films may be obtained by the use of solvents and driers.
