Abstract

1450175 Sequential polymerization ROHM & HAAS CO 20 Sept 1973 [20 Sept 1972 (2)] 44213/73 Headings C3G and C3P In the production of polymer latex particles as described in Specification No. 1,340,026 containing 25-50% by weight of a core of a rubbery polymer and 75-50% of a skin of a thermoplastic polymer by (1) emulsion polymerizing to obtain core particles of size below 3000 Š a monomer mixture of (a) one or more C 1 -C 8 alkyl acrylates optionally with a minor amount of a comonomer, (b) a cross-linking monomer and (c) an allyl ester of an α,#- unsaturated carboxylic acid in sufficient amount to provide a level of attachment of the core polymer to the skin polymer of at least 20%, the core particles having a Tg below 10‹ C. and (2) thereafter emulsion polymerizing a monomer mixture of (A) 80-100% of an alkyl methacrylate and (B) 0-20% of a comonomer to an average molecular weight of 80,000 to 300,000 giving a skin having a Tg of at least 60‹ C., the second stage monomers are added gradually under conditions causing rapid polymerization. Preferably monomer (b) is 0À1-5% of (a) and monomer (c) is at least 0À5% of (a). In examples are used (a) butyl acrylate, (b) butylene glycol diacrylate and (c) allyl acrylate or methacrylate or diallyl maleate, (A) methyl methacrylate and (B) butyl acrylate. Films are obtained by extruding the products or coatings by applying the products in solution.
