Abstract

1496280 Graft polymerization process KANEGAFUCHI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 12 Aug 1975 [23 Aug 1974] 33561/75 Heading C3G A cored-particle resin is produced by graft polymerizing 90 to more than 50 parts by weight of a monomer for a resin component B on to 10 to less than 50 parts of a cross-linked elastomer component A in the state of an emulsion having a gel content of more than 60%, a degree of swelling of less than 15 and a mean particle size of 500 to 2000Š, the degree of grafting being more than 30%, A being prepared by copolymerization of a cross-linking monomer with a monomer or monomers consisting of 100 to 70% by weight of C 1 to C 8 -alkyl ester, 0 to 30% C 1 to C 4 -alkyl methacrylate and 0 to 20% of other ethylenically unsaturated monomer and resin B being prepared from a monomer or monomers consisting of 100 to 60% by weight of C 1 to C 4 -alkyl methacrylate, 0 to 30% of C 1 to C 8 -alkyl acrylate and 0 to 10% of other ethylenically unsaturated monomer. Examples are given in which (a) n-butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate are copolymerized with triallylisocyanurate, diallylphthalate, allyl-methacrylate, tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate, allyl maleate, tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate or divinyl benzene and the resulting elastomer is grafted with methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate; (b) n-butyl acrylate is copolymerized with triallyl isocyanurate and the resulting elastomer is grafted as in (a); (c) n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and triallyl isocyanurate are copolymerized and the resulting elastomer is grafted with methyl methacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and (d) ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and triallyl isocyanurate are copolymerized and the resulting copolymer is grafted with methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate.
