Abstract

1431564 Weather resistant thermoplastic transparent graft polymers MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 13 March 1973 [24 June 1972] 12011/73 Heading C3G A polymer composition consists, by weight, of (A) 95 to 50% of a polymer of 100 to 80% methyl methacrylate and 0 to 20% of a copolymerizable vinyl or vinylidene monomer, at least 10 parts of said polymer (A), based on 100 parts of the cross-linked elastomer in (B) below being a graft polymer obtained by polymerizing not less than 10 but less than 1900 parts by weight of a monomer or monomer mixture consisting essentially, by weight, of 100 to 80% methyl methacrylate and 0 to 20% of at least one copolymerizable vinyl and/or vinylidene monomer, in the presence of 100 parts by weight of the cross-linked elastomer of (B), namely 5 to 50% of a cross-linked elastomer obtained by aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture consisting of (I) at least one C 2 to C 8 - alkyl acrylate, (II) allyl acrylate and/or allyl methacrylate and (III) benzyl acrylate and/or styrene, the particles of the said cross-linked elastomer being substantially spherical and of average size 0À05 to 0À25 micron and having a degree of swelling of from 3 to 20 and a gel content of not less than 80% and the component (II) being present in an amount of 0À5 to 5 parts per 100 parts of component (I) and the ratio {component (I) + component (II)} / component (III) being from 80/20 to 65/35. The composition may consist of a graft polymer obtained by polymerizing monomer comprising at least 80% methyl methacrylate in the presence of the said elastomer (B), or may comprise such a graft polymer blended with a polymer consisting of at least 80% methyl methacrylate. Examples are given in which graft polymers are produced from n-butyl acrylate / allyl acrylate or methacrylate / benzyl acrylate copolymer, n-butyl acrylate / allyl methacrylate / styrene copolymer, or n-butyl acrylate / allyl methacrylate / benzyl acrylate or styrene copolymer crosslinked with t-butyl peroxy 2-ethylhexanoate, with methyl methacrylate or a mixture thereof with methyl acrylate as graft monomer. The graft polymers are blended in some cases with methyl methacrylate / methyl acrylate copolymer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,254,226.
