Abstract

In the prodn. of heteropolymer (I) latex particles by multi-stage polymerisation, the individual (I) particles consist of 25-50 wt.% rubber, cross-linked stage (1) polymer (A), with Tg 10 degrees C and the rest a thermoplastic polymer (B) with Tg is not 60 degrees C, which is polymerised on this directly in stage (2). The (I) particles are produced by (1) emulsion polymerisation, to particle size is not >3000 A, of a monomer mixt. of (a) a main monomer system, comprising 1-8C alkyl acrylate(s) and opt. a small amt. of monoethylenically unsatd. comonomer(s); (b) a polyfunctional cross-linking monomer for (a); and (c) alkyl ester(s) of unsatd. alpha-beta-carboxylic acids, to give uniform cross-linking and a grafting value of (A) on (B) of is not 20%; (2) grafting (B) to (A) particles by adding the monomer stream gradually and carrying out emulsion polymerisation rapidly, using is not 80 wt.% hard alkyl methacrylate and the rest monoethylenically unsatd. comonomer(s), so that the average mol. wt. is 80,000-300,000; and (3) isolating the polymer particles from stage (2). Incorporation of certain grafting monomers in the stage (1) charge makes it possible to produce latex particles without intermediate stages. The prods. can be moulded by the melt technique.
