Abstract

1,157,615. Polymer dispersions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 July, 1966 [4 Aug., 1965], No. 33357/65. Headings C3G and C3P. A dispersion of polymer particles in an organic liquid in which the polymer has a swelling factor of from 20 to 50% is prepared by dispersion polymerization of a monomer in the organic liquid in the presence of disperse seed particles of another polymer having a swelling factor in the organic liquid of less than 15%, the swelling factor of the polymers being the percentage increase in weight of the respective polymers when: (i) the polymer is immersed in a mixture (10:1 by weight) of the organic liquid with the monomer from which the disperse polymer is to be derived; (ii) the mixture of liquid and monomer is at the temperature at which the dispersion polymerization is carried out; and (iii) the percentage increase in weight of the polymer is determined when equilibrium with the mixture has been reached. The dispersion polymerization is carried out in the presence of a stabilizer. Ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid are copolymerized in Example 1 in the presence of a dispersion of seed particles of methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer containing a lauryl methacrylatemethyl methacrylate graft polymer as stabilizer. In Example 2, vinyl acetate and methacrylic acid are oopolymerized in a dispersion of methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer seed particles prepared in the presence of terminally unsaturated polylauryl methacrylate as stabilizer precursor. Vinyl acetate is polymerized in Example 3 in a dispersion of vinyl acetateacrylic acid copolymer seed particles containing, as stabilizer, a methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer esterified with 12-OH-stearic acid self-ester.
