Abstract

An ion-exchange resin selective to ferric ions comprises a copolymer of an unsaturated b -diketone having a selective complexing affinity for ferric ions in an aqueous solution with a cross-linking agent having two polymerizable double bonds, the b -diketone having the general formula: CH2=CR-(CH2)n-CO-CH2-CO-CH3 in which R is an alkyl group having not more than 4 carbon atoms and n=0 or 1. The b -diketone may be methacrylyl acetone and the cross-linking agent may be ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, divinyl benzene or divinyl ketone. The copolymer may also be derived from a monomer having one double bond, such as methacrylic acid. Polymerization may be effected in bulk or in aqueous suspension in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or azo-bis-iso-butyronitrile.
