Abstract
A polymer of butadiene, methyl methacrylate and an aromatic vinyl compound is prepared by adding, in the presence of 0.5 to 10 parts of formaldehyde-sulphoxylic salt and an amount of less than 3 parts peroxide, at least 40 parts of monomer consistig of 10-80% methyl methacrylate and 90-20% of an aromatic vinyl compound to an aqueous dispersion containing less than 60 parts of a butadiene polymer which contains at least 50% of butadiene and in which more than 80% of particles thereof are below 0.1 m in diameter, the methyl methacrylate being first added for polymerization followed by the addition and polymerization of the aromatic vinyl compound. The butadiene polymer used to form the dispersion may be composed of a major proportion of butadiene and a minor proportion of styrene and the proportions of the constituents used are 25 parts butadiene polymer, 40 parts methyl methacrylate and 35 parts styrene. The formaldehyde-sulphoxylic salt may be added to the aqueous dispersion of the butadiene polymer before the addition of any monomeric material and the peroxide material may be added in increments, 1 part to the dispersion before adding monomer, 0.2 part with the methyl methacrylate and 0.2 part with the monomeric styrene.
