Abstract

Casting resins for the production of self-extinguishing plastics comprise from 5 to 25% by weight of a halogen-containing polymer (A) or copolymer (B), from 10 to 30% by weight of a known flame-inhibiting substance (C) containing halogen and/or phosphorus, from 3 to 25% by weight of a polyethylenically unsaturated cross-linking agent (D) and at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomeric polymerizable phosphorus- and halogen-free liquid organic compound (E) or a mixture of the monomer (E) with a polymer (F) thereof, the compound (E) or the compound (E) together with the polymer (F), when present, being in the casting resin in an amount of at least 30% by weight and the polymeric component (A) or (B) being soluble in the monomer (E). The polymeric component is preferably a poly-a -chloroacrylic acid ester or a copolymer of vinyl or vinylidene chloride with, for example, vinyl acetate. Component (C) preferably contains both halogen and phosphorus, e.g. tri-(b -chloroethyl)phosphate or the substance known as "Phosgard" (Registered Trade Mark); it may also be a compound, such as chloroacrylic acid, which can be copolymerized with the monomer (E). Component (D) may be a diacrylate or dimethacrylate ester and is preferably a dimethacrylate ester of a polyglycol, e.g. tri-, tetra- or poly-ethylene glycol; the dimethacrylate esters of ethylene and butylene glycol are also disclosed. The monomer (E) is preferably methyl methacrylate or styrene or a mixture thereof; the mixtures with corresponding polymer (F) are generally obtained by partial polymerization of monomer (E). Curing of the casting resins can be effected using a peroxide initiator, e.g. lauroyl peroxide, if desired together with a hydroperoxide such as methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. Accelerators may also be used, e.g. di-(p-toluenesulphonylmethyl) - amine, lauryl mercaptan, b - phenylethyl - dibutylamine hydrochloride, copper naphthenate and copper octoate. Redox systems such as diacyl peroxides/tertiary amines may also be used for the curing. The casting resins may be reinforced with glass fibres to form sheets or shaped elements.
