Abstract

Cation-exchange resins are made by sulphonating a copolymer obtained by polymerizing in the absence of a preformed polymer (a) acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, (b) at least one monoethylenic aromatic monomer, and (c) at least one polyethylenic cross-linking monomer, e.g. aromatic compounds containing two or more vinyl groups, polyallyl esters, polyhydric alcohol acrylates, diacrylamides, divinyl ketone and divinyl sulphide. The examples describe the copolymerization of acrylonitrile styrene and divinyl benzene in aqueous suspension with the aid of benzoyl peroxide, followed by the sulphonation of the resulting copolymers with sulphuric acid.
