Abstract
A soap having a polymeric structure, which may be cross-linked, in the mesomorphic phase is produced by polymerizing, and if desired cross-linking, an ethylenically unsaturated soap monomer in such a phase. The soap may comprise a major amount of the soap monomer, e.g. a styryl alkali metal undecanoate or linoleate, and a minor amount of cross-linking or copolymerizing agent, e.g. divinylbenzene or styrene. The soap contains a hydrophilic group, e.g. -COONa, -OSO3Na, -SO3Na, -N(CH3)3Cl, a pyridine salt or polyoxyethylene glycol, and a hydropholic group, e.g. C10- 24 hydrocarbon such as benzene or anthracine. The soap monomers may be polymerized using a peroxide, e.g. ditertiary butyl peroxide (or an azobis-butyronitrile) catalyst or irradiation with U.V., and may be cross-linked with gamma rays. In examples the soap monomer was polymerized in water.
