Abstract

1,151,480. Ion exchange resins. FARBENFABRIKEN WOLFEN, VEB. 14 May, 1968, No. 22890/68. Addition to 1,116,800. Heading C3P. Ion exchange resins are produced by copolymerizing monovinyl compounds and cross-linking agents to give hydrophobic copolymers of particle size and cross-linking density lower than required, impregnating the copolymer in aq. suspension, without a suspension stabilizer, by stirring with one or more non-water soluble monovinyl compounds which are then polymerized in aq. suspension after addition of a suspension stabilizer and with further stirring, by heating and ion exchange groups are then introduced into the copolymer. In Examples (1) styrene, divinyl benzene and ethyl styrene with benzoyl peroxide are polymerized in an aq. suspension of magnesium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid is added to destroy the suspension stabilizer, styrene and benzoyl peroxide are then added and after stirring sodium hydroxide is added to produce the magnesium hydroxide again and the suspension is heated; the copolymer is then treated with either (a) monochlorodimethyl ether and zinc chloride and the chloromethylated product is reacted with trimethylamine to form an anion exchanger or (b) sulphuric acid to form a cation exchanger; and (2) as (1) using n-dodecane together with the initial monomers.
