Abstract

Ion exchange resin particles of uniform size and shape are produced by copolymerizing monovinyl compounds and cross-linking agents to give a hydrophobic copolymer of particle size and density of cross linkage smaller than is required in the end product, impregnating the copolymer with one or more non-water-soluble monovinyl compounds in which a polymerization initiator may be dissolved and which are then polymerized in aq. suspension by the application of heat and ion-exchange-active groups are thereafter introduced in known manner into the particles so produced. In examples, (1) a mixture of styrene, ethylstyrene, divinylbenzene and azo-bis-isobutyronitrile is heated in an aq. mixture of sodium chloride and magnesium hydroxide, the polymer obtained is treated with a solution of azo-bis-isobutyronitrile in styrene and then heated suspended in water, the polymer is then either (a) chloromethylated with monochlorodimethyl ether and zinc chloride and then reacted with an aq. solution of trimethylamine to form an anion exchange resin, or (b) sulphonated with sulphuric acid to form a cation exchange resin; (2) a macroporous polymer is produced by polymerizing by heating an aq. suspension of styrene, ethyl-styrene, divinyl-benzene, magnesium hydroxide, an aliphatic hydrocarbon of b.p. 120-180 DEG C. and benzoyl peroxide, the aliphatic hydrocarbon is then removed from the polymer using steam and the polymer is treated with a solution of benzoyl peroxide in styrene and then heated suspended in water, the polymer is then either (a) chloromethylated with monochlorodimethyl ether and tin tetrachloride and then aminated as before to form an anion exchange resin, or (b) sulphonated as before to form a cation exchange resin.
