Abstract
Polymers substantially free of cross-linkages and ester groups and containing at least 60 per cent of at least one mono-vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon of the benzene series, and which in solution in nine times their weight of toluene have a viscosity of at least 82.4 centiposes at 25 DEG C., are sulphonated by reacting with chlorsulphonic acid, by admixing slowly and with vigorous agitation, in the presence of sulphur dioxide at a temperature between - 40 DEG C. and 10 DEG C. Suitable starting materials are polymers of styrene and ar-vinyltoluene, and copolymers thereof with a -methyl styrene, archloro-styrene, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. At least 0.7 molecular proportion of chlorosulphonic acid for each molecular proportion of monomer and an amount of from 80 to 99 per cent by weight of the reaction mixture of sulphur dioxide is used. The products are capable of being highly swollen by aqueous liquids to form aqueous compositions of stable viscosity. The polymer may be in the form of fine particles of not greater than 10 microns diameter and the reaction may be performed continuously to give swollen granules which are subsequently dried. They may be converted into salts by reaction with ammonia, amines and sodium or potassium hydroxide.
