Abstract

Ion-exchange materials are made by swelling an inert, solid, water-insoluble film-forming homopolymer, other than a polyalkylene, with a liquid ethylenically unsaturated monomer, polymerizing the monomer to form an active polymer by heating it, said monomer or polymerized monomer having or being provided with ion-exchange or chelation groups selected from carboxylic, carboxylate, sulphonic, sulphonate, sulphonium, primary, secondary and tertiary amine, quaternary ammonium, phosphoric, phosphonium and thiol, and salts of these groups. Polymers specified are polyhaloethylenes, polymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene, vinyl ethers and alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, polyamides, polyesters and natural and synthetic rubbers. Monomers specified are styrene, alkyl-, haloalkyl-, and halo-styrenes and other unsaturated aromatic compounds, vinyl pyridine, piperidine, butidine, carbazole and sulphones, acrylic and methacrylic acids and N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl methacrylates. Also present in the monomeric material may be polyunsaturated cross-linking agents, e.g. divinyl aryls, diolefines, glycol dimethacrylate diolefines and polyallyl esters. Free radical sites may be developed upon the preformed polymer by the use of irradiation, e.g. ultra-violet light, X-rays and alpha-, betaand gamma-rays; catalysts, e.g. peroxides, hydroperoxides, persalts and azo-compounds; and by mechanical treatment, e.g. mastication. The initial polymer may be in the form of a sheet or particles. After the polymerization step ion exchange groups, if not already present, are introduced by appropriate after-treatment, e.g. sulphonation, or chlormethylation followed by amination. In the example a sheet of polyvinyl chloride is swollen by styrene containing benzoyl peroxide and heated to 65 DEG C. The resulting sheet is treated with chlorosulphonic acid to provide a cation-exchange membrane.
