Abstract

Impact-resistant graft polymers are made by polymerizing an unsaturated monomer in mixed latices of a homopolymer of a diene and a copolymer of a diene. Unsaturated monomers specified are vinyl aromatic compounds, vinyl esters, ethers, halides and ketones, acrylonitrile, acrylates and methacrylates, allyl alcohol, chloride and acetate, acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric and tetrahydrophthalic acids, maleic anhydride, monoalkyl maleates, acrylamide, butenediol, and polyunsaturated monomers, e.g. divinyl benzene and esters and ethers containing two unsaturated groupings. Diene polymers specified are natural rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polychloroprene, copolymers of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile, isobutylene and methyl metacrylate, and butadiene-styreneacrylonitrile and butadiene-styrene-vinyl pyridine terpolymers. Polymerization is carried out in the presence of emulsifiers and peroxy, redox or azo catalysts. The resulting graft polymers may be used as such as moulding materials, or may be mixed with other polymers, e.g. styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate, and polymethyl methacrylate. When polyvinyl chloride is used as a blending resin, the resulting composition may also contain dioctyl phthalate, lead stearate and tin mercaptide.
