Abstract

Thermoplastic polymer compositions comprise a homogeneous mixture of (a) a graft polymer obtained by coagulation and graft polymerization of an aqueous latex or dispersion of 20 to 70 parts by weight of polybutadiene or a copolymer having a preponderant proportion of butadiene and a minor proportion of one or more comonomers, the grafting being effected with 80 to 30 parts by weight of a monomer mixture comprising 5-70% by weight of an alkyl methacrylate and 95 to 30% by weight of a vinyl aromatic compound and (b) polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer having a major proportion of vinyl chloride and a minor proportion of one or more comonomers. Component (a ) is prepared by commencing grafting when at least 90% of the coagulated butadiene polymer particles are not more than 0.2 microns in diameter, as described in copending Application No. 20784/65. The butadiene copolymer may comprise acrylonitrile, an acrylate ester or a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon as comonomer. The vinyl aromatic component of the grafting monomers may be, for example, styrene, methylstyrene or a nuclear-substituted styrene such as vinyl toluene, isoprepenyl toluene or chlorostyrene. Suitable comonomers for copolymer component (b) include vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methacrylate esters and acrylonitrile. Graft polymerization of component (a) can be effected with hydrogen peroxide, a persulphate or cumene hydroperoxide as catalyst; in the examples ferrous sulphate and dextrose are additionally present.
