Abstract

Moulding compositions are made by polymerizing a mixture of methyl methacrylate and one or more other ethylenic comonomers, the homopolymer of at least one of the comonomers having an index of refraction of at least 1,52, in the presence of a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile having a butadiene content greater than 50% by weight, so that a composition is obtained having a methyl methacrylate content of at least 20% by weight, a comonomer content of not more than 50% by weight and a butadiene content of 5 to 25% by weight. Monomers specified whose homopolymers have a refractive index of at least 1,52 are styrene, vinyl carbazole, phenyl, benzyl, o-cresyl and beta-chloroethyl methacrylates, acrylonitrile, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl phthalimide and vinyl pyridine. Other comonomers specified are ethyl methacrylate, methyl and ethyl acrylates and vinyl acetate. The polymerization of the monomers is preferably effected in a latex of the butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, although bulk methods may also be used. Potassium persulphate is used as an initiator in aqueous systems. In a modification of the process a part only of the monomers is polymerized in the presence of the butadiene copolymer, the remainder is separately polymerized and the two products are then blended.
