Abstract

A thermoplastic moulding composition comprises a mixture of (A) polymethyl methacrylate or a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with less than 40% by weight of units of a monoethylenic comonomer, and (B) a rubbery homopolymer or copolymer of butadiene present in the mixture in an amount of 1.5% to 5% by weight. Comonomers specified for use in polymer (A) are styrene, alkyl styrenes, halo-styrenes, acrylic and methacrylic nitriles and amides and lower alkyl acrylates. Comonomers specified for use with butadiene are acrylonitrile, styrene and methyl methacrylate. The mixture of the two polymers may be made by the following methods: (i) by mixing latices of the two polymers and removing the water, (ii) by mixing one polymer in dry form with a latex of the other polymer, and removing the water, (iii) by masticating both polymers together in dry form, and (v) by polymerizing methyl methacrylate-containing monomeric material in the presence of the rubber. In the example polymethyl methacrylate and a butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer are milled together.
