Abstract

A composition for moulding articles of high impact strength comprises a rubbery terpolymer obtained by polymerizing a mixture of butadiene-1:3 and any two monomers from the group styrenes, acrylonitrile, alkyl acrylonitriles, acrylates and vinylidene chloride, the butadiene constituting 50-90%, and each of the two other monomers constituting at least 5%, of the terpolymer, with a resinous interpolymer of a styrene with any one or more other monomers, which interpolymer forms 50-90% of the total of terpolymer and interpolymer. Examples of pairs of monomers for copolymerization with the butadiene in formation of the terpolymer are acrylonitrile and styrene, acrylonitrile and vinyl toluene, methyl acrylonitrile and styrene, ethyl acrylonitrile and styrene, chlorostyrene and styrene, acrylonitrile and chlorostyrene, methyl acrylonitrile and vinyl toluene, ethyl p acrylonitrile and vinyl toluene, acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and ethyl acrylate, acrolonitrile and methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate. The terpolymer may be cross-linked, the degree of cross-linkage being indicated by gel insolubility in methyl ethyl ketone. The composition may contain other rubbers, a preferred composition being 82,5% of a resinous copolymer of styrene 75 parts and acrylonitrile 25 parts, 10,0% of a terpolymer of butadiene 67 parts, acrylonitrile 16 parts and styrene 17 parts, and 7,5% of a rubbery copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile. The composition may contain a surface-active agent, e.g. sodium, potassium or calcium stearate. Specification 883,275 is referred to.
