Abstract

A self hardening composition comprises an inert inorganic filler, an aqueous water glass solution and a polymer or copolymer having a degree of polymerization of at least 5, and containing per monomeric unit an average of at least one acid group or carboxylic acid amide, ester, nitrile or anhydride group. Preferred acid groups are carboxylic, sulphonic, phosphoric, phosphonic and phosphorous. Specified monomers from which the polymers are derived are acrylic and methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinyl esters, e.g. the acetate, proprionate, stearate and benzoate, vinyl ethers e.g. methyl, ethyl and butyl vinyl ether, and the following acids: crotonic, maleic, fumanic, itasonic, citraconic, aconitic, vinyl sulphonic and vinyl phosphonic. The polymers may be obtained by homopolymerization of monomers containing the groups or by copolymerization of the monomers with e.g. unsaturated acids incapable of being polymerized alone. A list of preferred polymers is given. uartz is the specified filler.
