Abstract
Thermoplastic copolymers are made by copolymerizing a mixture of (a) an ethylenic monomer which forms a hard, i.e. brittle and inflexible, homopolymer, (b) an alkyl acrylate or alkacrylate which exerts a plasticizing effect on the copolymer, (c) an ethylenic mono- or di-carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, and (d) a diallyl ester of a dicarboxylic acid, the mixture of (a) and (b) contituting a major proportion of the total monomers and ingredient, (d) constituting at least 5% by weight of the total monomers. Monomers specified of the above classes are: (a) styrene, vinyl toluene and methyl methacrylate, (b) butyl acrylate and nonyl methacrylate, (c) acrylic methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids, and maleic anhydride, and (d) diallyl phthalate, isophthalate, malonate and succinate. Copolymerization is effected in a solvent for the copolymer in the presence of at least one initiator, e.g. a mixture of benzoyl peroxide and tert.-butyl hydroperoxide. The monomers and initiator may be added gradually to the polymerization medium as the reaction proceeds. The resulting copolymer solutions are mixed with polyepoxy compounds, e.g. diphenylolpropane diglycidyl ether, basic catalysts, e.g. a C16 alkyl quaternary ammonium chloride, and, if desired, a pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide, and the resulting compositions used to provide coatings on steel which are rendered solvent-resistant by storing. The examples describe the copolymerization of styrene, diallyl phthalate and methacrylic acid with (1) butyl acrylate, and (2) nonyl methacrylate.ALSO:Steel plates are provided with a solvent-resistant coating by applying thereto a solution containing a polyepoxy compound, a basic catalyst for the curing of the polyepoxy compound, and a copolymer derived from (a) an ethylenic compound which forms a hard homopolymer, (b) an alkyl acrylate or alkacrylate which exerts a plasticizing effect on the copolymer, (c) an ethylenic carboxylic acid, and (d) a diallyl ester of a dicarboxylic acid (see Division C3). After application, the initial coating is rendered solvent-resistant by stoving. The coating may also contain a filler or pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide. The examples describe coating steel plates with compositions of the above type in which the copolymers are made from styrene, diallyl phthalate, methacrylic acid and (1) butyl acrylate, and (2) nonyl methacrylate.
