Abstract

1390528 Coated products DAIKIN KOGYO CO Ltd 30 Oct 1972 [30 Oct 1971] 50012/ 72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Fluorohydrocarbon polymers are coated on to metal surfaces using a primer composition comprising: (I) an acrylic copolymer containing one or more glycidyl groups per molecule; (II) an epoxy resin other than I; (III) an alkylated methylolamino or -phenol resin, dissolved in (IV) an organic solvent. The composition may comprise (by wt.) 100 parts of I, 20-80 parts II, 2-20 parts III and IV may comprise 50-90% by wt. of the composition. I may be a polymer synthesized from 38-81% by wt. of a C 1-14 acrylate, 0-60% by wt. of a C 1-4 acrylate, 0-60% by wt. of (meth) acrylonitrile, 1-10% by wt. of glycidyl (meth) acrylate and 0.5-7% by wt. of an α, #-unsaturated carboxylic acid (provided the total amount of (meth) acrylonitrile plus acrylic acid lies in the range 15- 60% by wt. of the copolymer). An exemplified I contains (by wt.) 67% ethyl acrylate, 25% methyl methacrylate, 5% glycidyl methacrylate and 3% methacrylic acid, the monomers being polymerised in the presence of t-butyl perbenzoate. II may be a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. III may be a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone 2-methoxyethyl acetate. Conventional pigmenst, e.g. TiO 2 may also be present. The final coating may be of polyvinylidine fluoride or a copolymer thereof. It may be dissolved in a solvent or dispersed in a latent solvent, i.e. a solvent which dissolves the polymer at the temperature at which coating takes place.
