Abstract
Stoving lacquers free from strongly basic catalysts have as binders, mixtures of polychlorides and of copolymers derived from a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids, monomers containing the group <FORM:0992258/C3/1> in which R is alkyl or aralkyl and contains one aliphatic hydroxyl group, and other ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The mixtures preferably also contain etherified aminoplasts. Suitable hydroxyesters are 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, 2 - hydroxypropyl acrylate, 3 - hydroxybutyl acrylate, 6-hydroxyhexyl acrylate, and corresponding methacrylates, ethacrylates or phenylacrylates; 2-hydroxyethyl ethyl maleate, 2 - hydroxypropyl ethyl maleate, 2 - hydroxypropyl butyl maleate, di-(2-hydroxypropyl)maleate or fumarate; 2-hydroxy-3-chloropropyl acrylate, 2-hydroxy-1-phenylethyl acrylate, 2-hydroxy-3-butoxypropyl acrylate, and corresponding ethyl acrylates and a -phenyl acrylates. a ,b -unsaturated acids mentioned are acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, and half-esters or similar derivatives thereof. Copolymerizable monomers mentioned are styrene, a -methyl styrene, nuclear substituted styrenes, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, esters and nitrogen-containing derivatives of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Suitable polyepoxides are listed. Mono- and di-epoxy compounds may also be added to reduce viscosity. In examples the polyepoxide used is produced from epichlorohydrin and 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl dimethyl methane. In Example (1). Ethyl acrylate, styrene, methacrylic acid and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate are polymerized with cumene hydroperoxide in xylol, butanol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and lauryl mercaptan. The epoxy resin and butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin are added. (2). Methacrylic acid, 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate are copolymerized with cumyl hydroperoxide in xylol, butanol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and lauryl mercaptan, and epoxide resin and butylated melamineformaldehyde resin are added. (3). Methacrylic acid, 2-hydroxypropyl butyl maleate, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate are copolymerized with p-tert.-butyl hydroperoxide in xylol, and butanol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, ethylene glycol and epoxy resin are added. (4). Acrylic acid, 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate are co-polymerized with benzoyl peroxide in xylol, butanol, and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and epoxy resin and butylated melamineformaldehyde resin are added. (5) is similar to (4). but the co-polymer is formed from 2-hydroxypropylmethacrylate monobutyl maleate, methyl methacrylate, 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate and methacrylamide.
