Abstract

Thermosetting copolymer resins comprising by weight 0.5 to 20% allyl alcohol units, 1 to 30% N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylolmethacrylamide units and 50 to 98.5% of units of at least one monomer selected from acrylic esters, methacrylic esters, acrylonitrile, a ,BETAethylenically unsaturated acids, styrene, vinyl toluene and vinyl acetate, may be prepared by copolymerizing allyl alcohol in solution with (a) N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylol methacrylamide and at least one of said monomers, or (b) acrylamide or methacrylamide and at least one of said monomers and hydroxymethylating the product with formaldehyde. Preferred solvents are dioxane, acetonitrile and C1-4 alcohols. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of a modifier, e.g. a mercaptan, and excess allyl alcohol removed from the product by vacuum distillation or azeotropic distillation with toluene, propanol or propyl acetate. The products may be etherified with ethanol, propanol, butanol or allyl alcohol, and may be mixed with urea, melamine, alkyd and epoxy resins and nitrocellulose and used in the manufacture of paints and enamels. Examples describe the copolymerization of (1) allyl alcohol, acrylamide, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate together with (4) 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in dioxane in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and dodecyl mercaptan and the reaction of the products with solutions of formaldehyde in butanol; (2) the mixing of the product of Example (1) with titanium dioxide and xylene to form an enamel; and (3) the mixing of the enamel of Example (2) with a melamine resin paint and butanol. Specification 467,492 is referred to.ALSO:Substrates, particularly metals, may be coated with compositions comprising thermosetting copolymer resins containing by weight 0,5-20% allyl alcohol units, 1-30% N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylol methacrylamide units, and 50-98,5% of units of at least one monomer selected from acrylic and methacrylic esters, acrylonitrile, a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated acids, styrene, vinyl toluene and vinyl acetate. In examples, steel panels are coated with enamels comprising (2) an allyl alcohol (N-methylol acrylamide/methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate copolymer, titanium dioxide and xylene, and (3) a mixture of the enamel of Example (2) with a melamine resin paint and butanol; and with (4) a toluene solution of an allyl alcohol/N-methylol acrylamide/methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer.
