Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A process for painting a substrate, such as wood, metal and other sheet materials, comprises (a) applying to the substrate a film of a paint, the film-forming binder of which consists of a solution of (i) a resin which is an ester condensation product of a polyepoxide and an alpha, beta-olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, the resin having a molecular weight greater than 500 and 0.5-3 olefinic unsaturation units per 1000 of molecular weight in (ii) at least one monomeric liquid vinyl compound (i.e. a compound having terurinal olefinic unsaturation), and (b) copolymerising components (i) and (ii) on the substrate with ionising radiation having an energy of at least 5000 electron volts. The paint may contain a pigment and/or particulate filler. A suitable form of ionising radiation is an electron beam (100,000-450,000 electron volts). Examples of polyepoxides are those of the epichlorohydrin-bisphenol and epichlorohydrin-polyalcohol types. Suitably vinyl monomers include vinyl hydrocarbons such as styrene and acrylic monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. In Examples, the substrates used are phosphated steel panels and wood.
