Abstract

1,138,117. Coating with polyester resins. FORD MOTOR CO. 14 Feb., 1967, No. 7027/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B2] A substrate is coated by applying a film of a liquid, film-forming composition consisting essentially of an olefinically unsaturated polyester resin and a monomeric vinyl compound of lower viscosity than the resin and copolymerizing the resin and the vinyl monomer upon the substrate by means of ionizing radiation while maintaining the film at a temperature below that at which significant vaporization from the composition is initiated, the resin having a molecular weight in excess of 1000 and having 0À5 to 3 alpha-beta olefinic unsaturation units per 1000 units molecular weight. The ionizing radiation has a minimum energy of 5000 electron volts. Suitable vinyl compounds are divinyl benzene and α,#-mono-unsaturated mono-carboxylic acids or esters thereof. The polyester may be a copolymer of a polyhydric alcohol, an acyclic, α-unsaturated, α,#-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and an aliphatic, cyclic, dicarboxylic acid or anhydride. The polyhydric alcohol may be cyclic or may be neopentyl glycol. The anhydrides may be maleic anhydride and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride respectively. Suitable ionizing radiation is an electron beam applied at a potential of 200,000 to 350,000 electron volts. The vinyl monomer may comprise a mixture of a vinyl hydrocarbon and an acrylic monomer. In the examples, wood and metal panels are coated and a helium atmosphere is used during the irradiation. The comonomers used are styrene, divinyl benzene and methyl methacrylate.
