1310054 Esterified polymers containing hydroxyl groups REICHHOLD-ALBERTCHEMIE AG 14 May 1970 [27 May 1969] 23467/70 Heading C3P Hydroxyl group-containing polymers are produced by heating in an inert organic solvent with or without initiatiors or chain terminating agents, the following components: (a) 38-70% by wt. of styrene or one or more C 1-3 alkyl styrenes, (b) 3-15% by wt. of one or more α,#- ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids and (c) 10-40% by wt. of the glycidyl ester of an α-alkyl alkane monocarboxylic acid and/or α,α-dialkylalkane monocarboxylic acid of the empirical formula the carboxyl groups of (b) having been esterified by (c) under equivalency conditions, and wherein (a), (b) and (c) total 100% by wt. Component (a) is preferably styrene or vinyl toluene, and component (b) is preferably acrylic or methacrylic acid. The polymer preferably has a molecular weight of 5000 to 20,000 and an OH group content of 0À7-3À0% by weight. The polymer may be made into a lacquer by dissolving in a solvent without active hydrogen atoms and mixing with an organic polyisocyanate. The lacquers may be coated on to substrates which are then heated to produce crosslinking of OH groups by -NCO groups. A melamine derivative may also be present. In the examples the monomers used are styrene and acrylic acid. Solvents used are xylene and ethylene glycol monoacetate monoethyl ether.
