Abstract

In a film-forming copolymer condensate, derived from monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, some units of which are derived from at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, some units of which have been esterified, and at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, wherein the ester groups are residues derived from glycerol of the general formula or wherein R is a hydrocarbon residue of 1 to 26 carbon atoms or is wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each hydrogen or straight chain hydrocarbon residues of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, the acid number of the condensate being at least 50. The condensate may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers and reacting the copolymer with a glycidester of formula Alternatively the copolymerization may be effected in the presence of the above epoxide, or the acid monomer may be reacted with the epoxide and then copolymerized. A baking enamel may be prepared which comprises an organic solvent solution of the condensate, and preferably the condensate should contain 4- 50 mole per cent of the glycerol residue. Preferably R 1 and R 3 are hydrogen atoms or methyl groups and R 2 is a straight chain aliphatic hydrocarbon residue of 1 to 11 carbon atoms. The enamel may contain another organic solvent soluble resin. In the examples, methacrylic acid and butyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate, optionally styrene and an epoxide ester are polymerized with the aid of dibenzoylperoxide, and also esterified with a glycidester. In further examples, a baking enamel is prepared by mixing the copolymer condensate with a melamine-formaldehyde resin, optionally incorporating therein a titania pigment.
