Abstract

1347679 Acrylic coatings BERGER JENSON & NICHOLSON Ltd 30 Sept 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 48219/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A coating of an acrylic resin containing a plurality of pendant ethylenic linkages but substantially free from copolymerisable monomer is cured by irradiation. The resin may contain minor proportions of non-acrylic comonomers and preferably contains acid or glycidyl groups which are reacted with glycidyl acrylates or acrylic acid to introduce the unsaturation. In the examples methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate are copolymerised in solution and reacted with methacrylic acid in the presence of hydroquinone and triphenyl phosphine and coatings from the solutions cured with electrons or with U.V. light and photosensitizer. Coatings may be formed on paper, wood, glass or metal, e.g. steel sheets.
