Abstract

1314329 Electron beam polymerization BERGER JENSON & NICHOLSON Ltd 9 Oct 1970 [20 Oct 1969] 51441/69 Heading C3P A curable synthetic resin coating present on a substrate and comprising a polymer having at least 3 (or an average of more than 2) groups in the polymer molecule is cured by irradiating with a diffused electron beam produced by generating a beam of high energy electrons in the energy range from 25-300 kV. within a high vacuum and causing the electron beam to emerge from the high vacuum, without passage through a solid window, into a region of higher gas pressure wherein the coating is located, so that the electron beam is diffused by the gas in the region of higher gas pressure. In examples the coatings are applied to steel panels and comprise (a) an unsaturated polyester derived from tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, fumaric acid, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and glycerol, in combination with monomeric styrene or styrene plus #-hydroxypropyl methacrylate and (b) the reaction product of a methyl methacrylate / ethyl acrylate / glycidyl acrylate copolymer with methacrylic acid; the coatings also can include additives selected from titanium dioxide, carbon black and cellulose acetate butyrate.
