Abstract

1302515 Polymer coatings COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 23 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 3294/70 Heading C3P A process for coating surfaces comprises the steps of (a) preparing a composition consisting of an acrylic saturated resin in solution in at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the resin being a copolymer of acrylic and meth. acrylic acids or the esters of these acids, (b) applying the composition to a substrate in a layer having a thickness between 10 and 400 microns and (c) curing the coating under the action of ionizing radiation in the presence of air whereby the copolymer is cross-linked with the monomer. A cross-linking agent whose molecule comprises two or three ethylenic unsaturations may also be present in the composition. In examples, coatings of copolymers of methyl methacrylate and ethyl, butyl or isobutyl acrylate in solution in the corresponding monomers or in methyl methacrylate, with or without ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking agent, are irradiated with a high-energy electron beam. Pigments such as titanium oxide may also be incorporated.
