Abstract

A very hard, transparent moulding is prepd. by (1) incorporating a ring opening and cross-linking catalyst to a vinylmonomer compn. at low temp. and polymerising the compn. to >=90; conversion at low temp. without activating the catalyst, using ionising radiation or light, (2) moulding the polymer and (3) heating the moulding to activate the catalyst and thus harden the polymer by introducing transverse bonds. The process is specifically for compns. contg. 1-100% glycidyl ester e.g. (meth)acrylate and 0-99% of >=1 vinyl monomer. The process allows incorporation of the catalyst at the initial stage instead of incorporation prior to moulding, while inhibiting premature crosslinking and maintaining the thermoplasticity of the polymer for moulding.
