Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and C4] A flexible organic sheet material surface is coated on one side with 1 milligram per 10 to 1000 square centimetres of treated surface of the fluorinated polymer defined below in a 1 to 10% solution of the polymer in ethanol, isopropanol, tert-butanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or toluene, or dispersed in water. The fluorinated polymer may be applied as a low adhesion back size to the unsized side of a transparent film of regenerated cellulose which is subsequently coated on the primed side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive e.g. isooctyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, resin-tackified polyvinyl ethyl ether and specified proprietary products. The fluorinated polymer has 10 to 80% by weight of its polymerised units derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a functional group having a multiple bond forming a conjugated system with the ethylenic linkage, at least 10 mole per cent of these polymerised units containing a free carboxylic acid functional group forming the conjugated system and any other of these polymerised units containing a functional group forming the conjugated system and being hydrolysable to a free carboxylic acid group, and 20 to 90% by weight of its polymerised units derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a perfluoroalkyl group of at least six carbon atoms, and the polymer exhibits an inherent viscosity of from 0.1 to 2.0 in an isopropanol solution of 1g of polymer per 100 ml. of solution, a tack temperature of at least 60C, a solubility of at least 10 parts by weight in 90 parts by weight of a 50-50 mixture by weight of isopropanol and methyl ethyl ketone, and insolubility in xylene hexafluoride. The fluorinated polymer may be a terpolymer wherein from 10 to 90 mole per cent of the polymerised units contain the free carboxylic acid functional group forming the conjugated system, and the remainder of the polymerised units contain the functional group forming the conjugated system and are hydrolysable to the free carboxylic acid group. These latter may be derived from an acrylate ester of a straight chain hydrocarbon alcohol containing from 12 to 20 carbons atoms. Examples are directed to the polymerisation of monomer mixtures containing N-ethyl (or methyl or propyl) - perfluorooctyl sulphamido ethyl methacrylate (or acrylate) and acrylic acid alone or together with methyl methacrylate, noctadecyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile, or cyclohexyl acrylate and acrylonitrile.
