Abstract

A coated article is produced by applying to the article a solvent free flowable film of polymerization catalyst free polyester composition containing a colouring material which is unstable to heat and polymerizing the film by exposing the film to electrons of energies not greater than 300 k.e.v., the electron dosage being insufficient to raise the temperature of the coated surface of the article to an extent which initiates decomposition of the colouring material. The polyester may be formed from (1) maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, adipic acid, 4-cyclohexene-1,2-carboxylic anhydride or chlormaleic acid, and (2) propylene glycol or glycerol, and adding styrene, acrylonitrile or triallyl cyanurate to the reaction product. The colouring matter may be a dye or pigment.ALSO:A coated article is produced by applying to the article a solvent-free flowable film of polymerization catalyst-free polyester composition containing a colouring material which is unstable to heat and polymerizing the film by exposing the film to electrons of energies not greater than 300 k.e.v., the electron dosage being insufficient to raise the temperature of the coated surface of the article to an extent which initiates decomposition of the colouring material. The colouring matter may be a dye or pigment. The coating may be brushed, sprayed or dip coated on plastics, e.g. polyethylene or cars.
