Abstract

An intumescent fire-resistant paint comprises a liquid coating vehicle, a fire resistant filler, a binder material having a low softening point whereby it becomes viscous in a fire, and a blowing agent composed of a polymeric ester of methacrylic acid having a decomposition temperature in the range of 200 to 530 DEG C. Liquid coating vehicles specified are xylene solutions of epoxy resins, a dehydrated castor oil/epoxide resin composition, a dehydrated castor oil/epoxide resin/styrene composition and a tung oil/butylphenol-formaldehyde composition. As a fire-resistant filler there is specified mica. Binder materials specified are soft glass powder, boric acid and boron trioxide. As a methacrylic ester polymer there is specified a mixture of isomeric polybutyl methacrylates. Other specified ingredients in the compositions are titanium dioxide, carbon black and an amine/linoleic acid condensation product.ALSO:Plywood panels are painted with two coats of an intumescent fire-resistant paint comprising a liquid coating vehicle, a fire-resistant filler, a binder material having a low softening point whereby it becomes viscous in a fire, and a blowing agent composed of a polymeric ester of methacrylic acid having a decomposition temperature in the range of 200-530 DEG C. Liquid coating vehicles specified are xylene solutions of an epoxide resin, a dehydrated castor oil/epoxide resin/styrene composition, a dehydrated castor oil/epoxide resin composition and a tung oil/butylphenol-formaldehyde composition. Mica is specified as a fire-resistant filler. Binder materials specified are soft glass powder, boric acid and boron trioxide.
