Abstract

1280543 Intumescent coating ROLLSROYCE Ltd and INTERNATIONAL PAINT CO Ltd 12 Aug 1969 40242/69 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Surfaces of wood, glass, ceramics and in particular plastics and metal used in jet engines are coated with an intumescent paint comprising: (I) a non-aqueous solvent, (II) an epoxy resin ester, (III) a curing agent for II, (IV) a blowing agent, (V) a polyammonium phosphate carbonising initiator, (VI) a readily carbonisable material and (VIII) an inorganic pigment filler stable up to at least 130‹C. I may be xylene optionally containing a minor amount of n-butanol. II may be prepared by esterifying an epoxy resin with dehydrated castor oil. III may be a melamine-formaldehyde resin and IV dicyandiamide. Suitable V are disclosed in Specification 1074243. VI may be pentaerythritol and/or melamine. Examples of VIII are titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, carbon black, iron oxide, lead chromate or chromium dioxide. The coatings remain solid at 130‹C and intuanesce at about 300‹C.
