Abstract

A curable composition comprises a monomeric polyepoxide with at least two cyclohexene oxide groups, a vinylidene polymer and a boron trifluoride-amine complex or an alkyl titanate in which the alkyl group has 1-4 carbon atoms. The compositions may be dissolved in organic liquids or dispersed as organosols or plastisols, useful for coating. Other polyepoxides, and monomeric monoepoxides may be incorporated with the polyepoxide of the invention. Lists of suitable polyepoxides, vinylidene polymers, catalysts and optional conventional additives, e.g. plasticizers, stabilizers, solvents, pigments, fillers are given in the Specification. Examples illustrate compositions containing various combinations of the following ingredients. Polyepoxides.-3,4 - epoxy - 6 - methyl cyclohexylmethyl - 3,4 - epoxy - 6 - methylcyclohexanecarboxylate; bis - (3,4 - epoxy - 6-cyclohexylmethyl) adipate; 3,4 - epoxycyclohexylmethyl 6 - methyl - 3,4 - epoxycyclohexylmethyl ether. Vinylidene polymers. - Polyvinyl chloride; mixed polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer; vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol copolymer; polyacrylonitrile; polystyrene; mixed polyvinyl chloride and a copolymer of ethylene with ethyl acrylate; mixed polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene. Catalysts. - Boron trifluoride - piperidine; boron trifluoride-ethylamine; tetraisopropyl titanate. Examples 25-32 illustrate the use of di-2-ethylhexyl adipate as a plasticizer, Example 32 the use for preparing an organosol of a thinner consisting of xylene, diisobutylketone and a naphtha solvent known as Apcothinner. Example 33 uses a mixture of methyl isobutyl ketone and toluene as a solvent. Specifications 735,974, 768,157, U.S.A. Specifications 2,745,847, 2,750,395, 2,794,030, 2,863,881, 2,874,167 and 2,884,408 are referred to.ALSO:Compositions containing a compound having at least two cyclohexane oxide groups, a vinylidene polymer and a boron trifluoride-amine complex or a lower alkyl titanate curing catalyst are used for coating. In Example 32, an organosol containing polyvinyl chloride, 3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexylmethyl-3, 4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexanecarboxylate, boron trifluoride-piperidine, di-2-ethylhexyl adipate, xylene, diisobutylketone and a naphtha solvent known as "Apcothinner" (Registered Trade Mark) was sprayed on steel panels having zinc phosphate surface treatment, air-dried and baked. In Example 33, films were cast on glass and on zinc phosphate-treated steel from a solution containing bis(3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexylmethyl) adipate, a copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol, boron-trifluoride-piperidine, methyl isobutyl ketone and toluene. The films were air-dried and baked. Specifications 735,974 and 768,157 are referred to.
