Abstract

1285034 Coated container closures W R GRACE & CO 3 Oct 1969 [7 Oct 1968] 47478/68 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] The interior metal surface of a container closure is coated with a plastisol or organosol comprising (i) a vinyl chloride polymer containing over 50 wt. % v.c. units, (ii) a plasticiser and (iii) a thermosetting phenolic resin, which coating is then heated to evaporate any solvent present, gel the plasticised themoplastic resin and cure the phenolic resin. The surface may be steel, tinplate, or aluminium; in a preferred embodiment the surface is roller-coated with an organosol as above, and then provided with a circumferential sealing coating of a plastisol (which may incorporate a phenolic resin or a blowing agent). The coating composition may include 0.5-50 wt. % phenolic resin based on the weight of thermoplastic resin. The vinyl chloride polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride-maleic anhydride copolymer, and the phenolic resin may be derived from alkyl- or alkoxy-substituted phenols or ethers of methylolphenols.
