Abstract

Articles are impregnated or coated for electrical insulation by applying styrol in a pre-polymerized state or as a solution of polystyrol in monomeric styrol without a volatile solvent and subsequently hardening it by a heat treatment. The treating liquid may contain catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide or non-volatile softening materials such as tricresyl phosphate. The heat treatment may be effected at 100-180 DEG C. if desired, under pressure. The solutions may be coloured. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of a coating composition which is subsequently hardened by heat, comprising polystyrol and inorganic or organic colouring matters dissolved in benzene. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Articles are impregnated or coated for electrical insulation by applying styrene in a pre-polymerised state, or as a solution of polystyrene in monomeric styrene without a volatile solvent, and subsequently hardening it by a heat treatment. The impregnating liquid may contain catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide or non-volatile softening materials such as tricresyl phosphate. Impregnation may be carried out in vacuo. The heat treatment may be effected at 100--180 DEG C. if desired under pressure. Examples are given.
