Abstract

Rubber-like material is prepared by heating a hardenable phenol-aldehyde condensation product that is compatible, on heating, with neutral non-volatile substances such as resins or oils, with a polymer of a mono-olefine containing an aromatic nucleus. The products may be used in the manufacture of varnishes, enamels, coating and impregnating agents, of water - resistant pasteboards, sandpapers and abrasive discs, for floor and wall coverings, and for lining tubes. In an example, a polymer of methylstyrene is heated with a cresol polyalcohol that has been partly esterified with benzoyl chloride, and the product may be dissolved in xylene or solvent naphtha and used as a varnish.
