Abstract

In the preparation of luminous paints or mouldable compositions, a luminous substance is mixed with polymerized styrene, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl tetra hydronaphthalene or homologues thereof, such as methyl or ethyl styrene or methyl vinyl naphthalene. In examples, luminous paints are made by dissolving polymerized styrene in a mixture of toluene, xylene, and butyl acetate together with tricresyl phosphate as a softening agent, and adding a luminous substance such as strontium or zinc sulphide containing small amounts of rubidium, manganese, bismuth, silver or copper as exciters. The product obtained by melting and mixing boric acid with phthalic anhydride and naphthalic anhydride may also be used. The paint may be applied to surfaces of plaster, porcelain, glass, wood, metal, or paper. A primer coating consisting of a polystyrene lacquer containing titanium white or lithopone may first be applied. A mouldable composition is made by mixing a luminous paint containing calcium, zinc or strontium sulphide with styrene, and heating the mixture to 140 DEG C. with a small amount of sulphuric acid. The polymerized product may be rolled into sheets, bands, foils or poured into moulds. Specification 318,958, [Class 95, Paints &c.], is referred to.
